IM-K Community Schools Alternative Education Program
Breaking Down the Barriers to Education
Misson Statement
The Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Schools Alternative Education's Mission is to offer all high school students a second chance at being successful in earning a high school diploma. It is our goal to provide a different type of learning environment that the traditional high school setting cannot afford them. Our objective is to break down the barriers to education, so all types of learners will gain not only an education, but be able to make informed post high school decisions, gain self-respect and contribute in a positive manner to the community in which they live.

About Us...
The IM-K CS Alternative Education Program encompasses the four school districts in Dickinson County. Students are referred from Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Norway and North Dickinson. The students are all high school students, who for some reason or another need a different type of learning environment that the traditional high school setting cannot afford them. Alternative Education is their second chance to be successful at earning a high school diploma.
The curriculum in Alternative Education is designed to follow the Michigan Merit Guidelines along with the student's referring school district's graduation requirements using some self-paced and independent studies. Students are able to take advantage of the vocational/technical classes offered at the Dickinson-Iron Tech Center, if eligible. Classes are small so students can receive as much attention from a teacher as they need to be successful. The Alternative Education Program is located at the East Side High School (Former East Elementary School).
Alternative Education is a vital program for the local school districts. It plays an important role in the community by providing young people with another way to learn and grow. Alternative Education breaks down barriers to education for students who are at risk of dropping out of school and for students who need a more intimate environment in which to learn.
Referral Process
In order to be accepted for enrollment in the IM-K Community Schools Alternative Education Program a student must:
1. Be referred by the high school building Principal of the school district they attend or district in which they reside if they are not currently enrolled.
